June 15 | Fremont Interurban
Participants
in the BFC portion of the Nudes Painting Nudes segment
at the Fremont Fresh Art Festival take a much needed
outdoor break in front of Fremont's beloved sculpture "Waiting
for the Interurban" at Fremont Avenue and
34th Street.
The
sculpture was started by the newly formed Fremont
Arts Council in 1978. The Fremont Arts
Council is known today for hosting the most funky and
elaborate projects in Seattle, including the Summer
Solstice Parade, where the painted naked cyclists first
started appearing in the early 1990's

June 1 | Kiteflying at Gas Works
Park - World Naturist Day

To
celebrate World Naturist Day in 2003 (always celebrated
on June 1st) we did a quick shot of Daniel flying a box
kite at the top of the hill at Seattle's scenic Gas
Works Park, located on the north shore of Lake Union.
The day was overcast and we just barely had enough wind
to get the kite up.

This
historic landmark was previously used as a plant for
the manufacture of gas from coal - later converted to
crude oil. As a result of their environmental negligence,
much of the area around the plant has high levels of
toxins and swimming is ill-advised.
At
the top of this hill, often used to view the dramatic
city panorama, is a sculpted sundial reflecting the funky
spirit of the Fremont community several blocks to the
northwest. The downtown Seattle skyline and Space Needle
to the south, can be seen in the background of several
of the pictures. The Seattle Police Harbor Patrol Headquarters
is over the hill to the west, and the remains of the
plant are to the east.

January 18 | Polar Bare Swim at Luther
Burbank Park on Mercer Island
The
Body Freedom Collaborative (BFC) of Seattle hosted a Polar
Bare Dip on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at 9:00
AM at Luther
Burbank Park on the north end of Mercer Island (which
lies in the middle of Lake Washington) in King County,
Washington. This small kickoff event was used as a small
promotional photo opportunity for the group, signaling
our commitment to bringing clothing-free opportunities
on public lands closer to the people of the cities and
beyond.
Daniel,
Kathy, and Mark take a dip into 45 degree F Lake Washington.
Some images may be enlarged if you click on them. BFC
images taken by KG.
The
event is similar to other polar bare/bear swims with
the unique difference, in part, being a tribute to Benjamin
Franklin, known for insisting on taking his morning "air
bath". His birthday is on the 17th of January.
Luther
Burbank, the namesake for this park, was best known for
his work in horticulture. He was also quite a free thinker: "I
believe in the immortality of influence", he once
said. The BFC believes that a small number of dedicated
people working together, within their communities, can
have a dramatic influence on public opinion and policy.
Luther
Burbank Park is now home to King County Park System's
administrative offices. We thought it would be symbolic
to do a public action at the Park System's headquarters,
and also arguably one of the metropolitan area's most
beloved parks, still deemed off-limits for wholesome,
clothing-free recreation.
As
a native of Mercer Island, this is probably Daniel's
first beach he ever went wading in as an infant .
