Sept 28 | Iron Horse State Park, John Wayne Pioneer Trail
(Washington State)
Mark
& Daniel nudify the John Wayne Trail. The following information
is from Washington
State Parks page:
"The John Wayne Pioneer Trail follows the former roadbed
of the Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul-Pacific Railroad two-thirds
of the way across Washington, from the western slopes of
the Cascade Mountains to the border with Idaho. The 100-mile
portion from Cedar Falls (near North Bend) to the Columbia
River near Vantage is managed as Iron Horse State Park.
It is open to hikers, bikers, equestrians and horse-drawn
wagons in summer, and to snowmobiles, dog sleds and cross-country
skiers in winter."
To
our starting point (there are several). We took Exit
38 from I-90 Eastbound. Turned right on Forest Service
road 9020, went up one mile.

Brian,
Daniel, Kathy, Mark, and Russ enjoyed naked kayaking,
wading, and beach combing during an extremely low tide
and struggled
to return to the marina against a strong current during
the rising tide.
From
everettwa.org: "Jetty Island is a two-mile long, man-made
island with
rare
sandy beaches
and shallow warm

January 18 | Polar Bare Swim at Luther
Burbank Park on Mercer Island
The
Body Freedom Collaborative (BFC) of Seattle hosted a Polar
Bare Dip on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at 9:00
AM at Luther
Burbank Park on the north end of Mercer Island (which
lies in the middle of Lake Washington) in King County,
Washington. This small kickoff event was used as a small
promotional photo opportunity for the group, signaling
our commitment to bringing clothing-free opportunities
on public lands closer to the people of the cities and
beyond.
Daniel,
Kathy, and Mark take a dip into 45 degree F Lake Washington.
Some images may be enlarged if you click on them. BFC
images taken by KG.
The
event is similar to other polar bare/bear swims with
the unique difference, in part, being a tribute to Benjamin
Franklin, known for insisting on taking his morning "air
bath". His birthday is on the 17th of January.
Luther
Burbank, the namesake for this park, was best known for
his work in horticulture. He was also quite a free thinker: "I
believe in the immortality of influence", he once
said. The BFC believes that a small number of dedicated
people working together, within their communities, can
have a dramatic influence on public opinion and policy.
Luther
Burbank Park is now home to King County Park System's
administrative offices. We thought it would be symbolic
to do a public action at the Park System's headquarters,
and also arguably one of the metropolitan area's most
beloved parks, still deemed off-limits for wholesome,
clothing-free recreation.
As
a native of Mercer Island, this is probably Daniel's
first beach he ever went wading in as an infant .
