Burning
Man is an annual experiment in temporary community
dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance.
It
is arguably one of the greatest counter-culture funky festivals
ever! it would be great to see this spirit distributed among
all the various cities where the participants come from. Do
something creative and fun in your own town! The Burning Man
festival is getting too popular and populated for many peoples'
taste.

Kathryn
Mann and Debra Ballou were arrested in Orono, Maine
on November 2, 2001 for merely going jogging. They were arrested
and they went to the police station
for the usual humiliating routine. They were acquitted in
court on January 30, 2002. [source: Paul Rapoport] A
sexist judge points out that their genitals were not visible
and lets them off the hook, sort of. This can not be considered
a victory.
"I
think everyone should be able to run around naked. I don't
think I did anything wrong". (quote

public actions involving non-sexual nudity in Bend,
Eugene and Portland. Her actions have been picked up
by newspapers around the world. She associates with the
Freedom To Be Yourself (FTBY), and was recently the subject
of an Advisory issued by the Naturist Action Committee
(see www.nac.oshkosh.net).

There
was also an article at bend.com by Barney Lerten titled "Judge

In return, Terri Webb accuses Judge Michael Sullivan of 'hatred
toward human race'" dated May 2, 2002 with an update May
10, 2002.
Careful:
The one small Associated Press release with some erroneous
information has sparked a flurry of articles on Terri Webb
with the same errors. One such article recently appeared in
Naturally Magazine issue no 42. Note that Terri Webb does not
wear red cowboy boots and her new trial date was rescheduled
to May 2, 2002 as described above.

An
annual run of streakers marking the last day of classes in
winter. Started in 1985 by a handful of students and has since
grown to around a thousand participants annually. The
event died a few years ago after concerted action by police,
encouraged to end it by the University of Michigan administration.

The
Fremont Arts Council in
Seattle produces local celebrative art events including
the Fremont Summer Solstice Parade, Trolloween, the Feast
of the Winter Solstice, and the May Day Maypole Dance.
While
not officially part of the Solstice Parade, many body-celebrative
participants such as the Nekkid Bicyclists have been
well-received by parade goers year after year and have introduced
the public to healthy body positive attitudes in a festive
way. The question is, when will the Nekkid Bicyclists be included
officially in the parade and when will the police stop threatening
to arrest them?

at http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/gyngve/ for
the original versions of these images and for more 2001 Solstice
Parade pictures.
The
2001 event was marked by a police threat of arrest of any naked
participants and, if nudity in the parade was not discouraged
by the FAC, a possibility of shutting down the festival in
the future by revoking the event's permit. At the last minute
the police where told to back off and the crowd was delighted
to see the Nekkid Bicyclists make an appearance. In their own
way the Nekkid Bicyclists are pushing the issue of public nudity
in Seattle. Perhaps they will find the courage to do what they
do outside the semi-safe haven of artistic expression.
An
artist produced this painting to invite the community of Seattle
to mock the looming threat of police arrests of naked participants,
including the Nekkid Bicyclists, during the 2001 Fremont
Summer Solstice Parade. Pictures above appear courtesy
of Gary David Yngve. Visit his site at http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/gyngve/ for

Daniel
became interested in public policy after becoming outraged
at threats by authorities against the Fremont Art Council's
Fremont Summer Solstice Parade and the Nekkid Bicyclists. He
also was spurred to act by reading about the Freedom to be
Yourself and by the actions of dozens of activists across the
globe. Participated in two small and brief FTBY protests with
Terri Webb in Oregon.
Daniel's
site for body freedom is bodyfreedom.org,
the site you are currently viewing. He also enjoys making propaganda,
writing about his beliefs (see Nude
and Natural Vol 21.3: 24-28, Spring 2002),
and involving himself in global discussions and actions when
he can. He also hopes to make a collaborative film on body
freedom as it has developed over time, as it exists today,
and how it will be fully integrated into life for all in the
future.
United
States of America, (on the road):
Dave,
also known as "Barefoot Walker" and "Naked
Driver". He never covers his feet, and seldom
anything else.
In
2001, he drove 15000 miles (24000 km) naked, through eleven
states in the USA. In 2002 he met his goal of 25000 miles (40000
km). Most of these trips are for chess tournaments, but one
in 2002 was to pick up states he had not visited before. His
mark for 2003 is 30000, to include Alaska and trans-Canada!
When
he must stop for fuel or any other reason he needs to exit
the vehicle, he puts on a long tank top (and nothing else)
with "DRIVE NAKED" printed on it. He is naked outdoors
as much as possible, including doing the "Bare to Breakers" in
San Francisco. His distinction in that event is that he is
the only one to do it barefoot as well as bare-everything-else.
One of his slogans is "be naked all you can!" and
he encourages everyone to "Drive naked!"
